Number to Words — How to Write Amounts in Words

Writing amounts in words is required for cheques, legal documents, invoices, and formal financial paperwork. This converter handles any number up to 999 crore (Indian system) or 999 billion (international system) and converts it to correct English words instantly.

Indian Numbering System vs International

India uses a different grouping system for large numbers. After thousands, Indian numbers group in twos rather than threes. 1,00,000 = 1 lakh (not "one hundred thousand"). 10,00,000 = 10 lakhs. 1,00,00,000 = 1 crore. In the international system: 1,000,000 = one million. 1,000,000,000 = one billion. Switch between systems using the buttons above.

Cheque Amount in Words

When writing a cheque, the amount in words must be written clearly and the word "Only" is added at the end to prevent tampering. Example: a cheque for ₹12,500 should be written as "Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Only." Enable the cheque format checkbox above to get the correctly formatted output.

Enter the number above and it converts instantly. For cheques, enable the "Cheque format" checkbox to add "Only" at the end.
1 lakh = 1,00,000. In words: One Lakh. 10 lakhs = 10,00,000. 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = One Crore.
Enter any number above for instant conversion. 1=One, 11=Eleven, 21=Twenty-One, 100=One Hundred, 1000=One Thousand, 100000=One Lakh (Indian) or One Hundred Thousand (International).
