What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index is a screening measurement from height and weight: BMI = kg / m². It estimates whether someone is underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. While it doesn't measure body fat directly, it correlates with direct measures and is a useful first-step assessment.

BMI for Asian Populations

Asian populations face health risks at lower BMI values. WHO recommends lower cut-offs: normal is 18.5-22.9 (vs 24.9), overweight starts at 23 (vs 25), obesity at 25 (vs 30). This calculator shows both standards.

Limitations

BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, doesn't account for fat distribution, age, or sex. Athletes may show as "overweight" due to muscle mass. Always consult a healthcare professional for complete assessment.

FAQ

BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². Example: 70kg, 1.75m = 70/(1.75×1.75) = 22.9.
WHO: 18.5-24.9. Asian: 18.5-22.9.
