What Is Domain Age?
Domain age refers to how long a domain name has been registered. It is calculated from the domain's creation date (recorded in the WHOIS database) to today. A domain registered in 2005 that is still active today has a domain age of approximately 20 years.
Why Does Domain Age Matter for SEO?
While Google's John Mueller has stated that domain age itself is not a direct ranking factor, older domains tend to rank better because they have had more time to accumulate backlinks, build topical authority, and establish user trust. When you buy an older domain, you are also inheriting its link history — which can be a significant advantage or disadvantage depending on the quality of those links.
Domain age is also relevant when evaluating website credibility. A website with a 1-month-old domain claiming to be an established business is a red flag, while a 10-year-old domain signals longevity and stability.
How to Read WHOIS Data
WHOIS is a publicly accessible database that stores registration information for all domain names. The key dates are: Created On — when the domain was first registered; Expires On — when the current registration expires; Updated On — the last time the WHOIS record was modified (usually when renewed or nameservers changed).
