Word Counter — Count Words and Characters Online
This free word counter counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, and paragraphs in real time as you type or paste text. It also calculates estimated reading time and speaking time, making it useful for blog posts, essays, articles, speeches, and social media character limits.
Why Word Count Matters
Different writing contexts have specific word count requirements. Academic essays typically require 500–5,000 words depending on level. Blog posts that rank well on Google average 1,500–2,500 words for informational content. LinkedIn posts perform best under 1,300 characters. Tweets are limited to 280 characters. Short stories range from 1,000–7,500 words. This counter handles all these use cases — just paste your text and see the numbers instantly.
Reading Time and Speaking Time
The tool calculates estimated reading time based on the average adult reading speed of 200–250 words per minute, and speaking time based on the average speaking rate of 130 words per minute. These estimates are useful for calibrating article length for target reading times, timing presentations and speeches, and planning podcast or video scripts.
Character Counter
The character count includes both the count with spaces and without spaces. Character count without spaces is useful for checking against limits that ignore whitespace. With spaces is used for most platform character limits (Twitter, LinkedIn, SMS). The tool updates both counts instantly as you type.
Keyword Density
The keyword density section shows the most frequently occurring words in your text, filtered to remove common stop words (the, a, and, etc.). This is useful for basic SEO checks — if your target keyword appears at a frequency significantly below 1–2% of total words, you may want to use it more naturally throughout your content.
