How Morse Code Works

Morse code represents each letter and digit as a unique sequence of dots (Β·) and dashes (β€”). A dot is a short signal; a dash is three times as long. Letters are separated by a gap equal to one dot, words by a gap equal to seven dots. Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s for use with the electric telegraph. It is still used today in amateur radio (ham radio) and aviation navigation beacons.

SOS β€” The Universal Distress Signal

SOS in Morse code is ... --- ... β€” three dots, three dashes, three dots. It was adopted as the international maritime distress signal in 1906 because it was simple to recognise and send even by untrained operators. The phrase "Save Our Souls" was backronymed onto it later. When sent continuously without gaps between letters, it forms a distinctive pattern impossible to confuse with normal messages.

How to Read Morse Code Input

In the Morse β†’ Text direction, enter dots and dashes with: space between letters, / or three spaces between words. Example: .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -.. decodes to HELLO WORLD. Both . (period) and Β· (middle dot) are accepted as dots. Both - (hyphen) and β€” (em dash) are accepted as dashes.
