What Makes a Year a Leap Year?

The Gregorian calendar adds a 366th day โ€” February 29 โ€” to years that are divisible by 4, except century years (1800, 1900, 2100), which must also be divisible by 400 to qualify. So 2000 was a leap year (400 รท 400 = 5), but 1900 was not (1900 รท 400 = 4.75). The rule exists because the solar year is approximately 365.2422 days โ€” without leap years, the calendar would drift about 1 day every 4 years, misaligning seasons over centuries.
